Eat Bulaga! is a local noon-time variety show in the Philippines produced by the Television And Production Exponents Inc. (TAPE) of Malou Fagar and Tony Tuviera. The program is the longest-running variety show on Philippine television. It also holds the Philippine record of all-time number of live TV episodes. pinoy ako tv the show is aired on GMA Network at 12pm on Weekdays and on Saturdays. The show is broadcast from TAPE Studios at the Broadway Centrum in Quezon City. The show’s main hosts are Vic Sotto, Tito Sotto and Joey de Leon.Production Specialists, Inc., a company owned by Romy Jalosjos, brought the idea of creating a noontime show for Radio Philippines Network (RPN). Antonio Tuviera, who was working for the company, thought that the comic troika of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto and Joey de Leon, better known as TVJ (who had gained fame through GMA Network’s Discorama and as pinch-hitters for Student Canteen, but subsequently left both), would be the perfect hosts for the new program. At a meeting at the InterContinental Manila parking lot, Tuviera made the offer to them; they accepted.

De Leon coined the title of the show: Eat represents lunchtime while Bulaga (which means “to surprise”) represents their plan to fill the show with big surprises. The title is also a play on two children’s games: Eat is the transliteration of It from the game Tag while Bulaga refers to Peek-a-boo!. Because of this, the slogan “Hangga’t May Bata, May Eat Bulaga!” (“While There Are Children, There will be Eat Bulaga!”) was coined, also by de Leon. Vic Sotto, on the other hand, composed the theme song.

Eat…Bulaga! premiered on July 30, 1979. TVJ, along with Chiqui Hollman and Richie Reyes (a.k.a. Richie d’ Horsie) were the original hosts. During its first few months on the air, the show was in danger of cancellation. Not only did it face competition against the longest-running noontime show at that time, Student Canteen, it also lacked advertisers. In addition, TVJ did not receive their salaries for six months.

Eat…Bulaga! slowly gained top-rating status in 1980 after the introduction of the segment “Mr. Macho.” Production Specialists soon handed production to Tuviera’s TAPE, Inc. In May 1982, the domestic satellite was launched, allowing Eat…Bulaga! and other RPN programs to be aired nationwide. During the same time, Coney Reyes joined the show while Hollman moved to Student Canteen. In 1987, Aiza Seguerra joined the show after finishing as a runner-up in the “Little Miss Philippines” segment.

ASAP 20 (All-Star Sunday Afternoon Party) is broadcast by ABS-CBN It is aired every Sunday after Kapamilya Kiddie Blockbusters and before Kapamilya Mega Blockbusters in the Philippines. It is mainly presented by some of the country’s premier performers namely Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano, Zsa Zsa Padilla, Vina Morales alongside Piolo Pascual, Sarah Geronimo, Toni Gonzaga and Bamboo. The show aired its pilot episode on February 5, 1995, and airs live Sundays. The show also broadcasts worldwide through ABS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel. The program is currently the longest-running Sunday noontime variety show on Philippine television, surpassing GMA Supershow’s record of nearly two decades.

When “Sa Linggo nAPO Sila” became “‘Sang Linggo nAPO Sila” to replace Eat Bulaga which left ABS-CBN to transfer to GMA Network, ASAP was conceptualized and launched in 1995 as a “concert party” on Sundays. Then, Martin Nievera and Pops Fernandez, along with Ariel Rivera and Dayanara Torres (fresh from her crowning at Miss Universe, where it was staged in Manila in 1994), were tapped as main hosts for the show. The cast of “Pare Ko” (Claudine Barretto, Victor Neri, Jolina Magdangal, Roselle Nava, Gio Alvarez, Jao Mapa, Nikka Valencia) became co-hosts for the show to attract the younger viewers. In 1996, the show celebrated its first anniversary and later top-caliber leading man Piolo Pascual joined the show. When Dayanarra Torres left the country, Charlene Gonzales took her place. Channel V’s Joey Mead also joined the show for a while. By 1998, regular guest Zsa Zsa Padilla became a regular host the following year. After Martin Nievera left, Richard Gomez took his place. In March 1999, Onemig Bondoc joined the group. The SOP hosts Vina Morales & Mo Twister also joined the show.

The show originally had their own theme song, Hot na Hot sa ASAP in 1995. In the show’s 2nd anniversary, another theme song was released, Better Than Ever. Initial broadcast commenced on February 1995 at the Delta Theatre in Quezon Avenue. In March 1998, they transferred to their own studio at the Studio 10 of the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City.

In 2003, the show was reformatted as ASAP Mania, after which some of its original hosts went to the show SOP Rules. In 2005 the format changed to ASAP ’05 and later Toni Gonzaga joined ASAP. In 2006, the show launched a somewhat complicated logo where the words ASAP were made out of dots connected which had been in use until 2014. In February 2007, Lani Misalucha joined ASAP. Ex-SOP performers Karylle (daughter of Zsa Zsa Padilla) and Billy Joe Crawford, joined ASAP in 2008.

On January 8, 2010, the show was relaunched as ASAP XV to mark its fifteenth anniversary. In the show’s special anniversary on February 7, 2010, a new set was introduced. After the year numbers in the show title wasn’t adapted in 2010, a new show named ASAP Rocks launched January 2, 2011. On April 3, 2011, a new set was introduced. On January 1, 2012, the show was launched as ASAP 2012.

The show premiered on October 24, 2009 as a morning talent show for over four regular seasons and various special editions. On January 28, 2012, the show aired its final episode with its two-year competition format and ended with an impartial farewell. On January 30, the program revealed a teaser showing its reincarnated look as a reformatted noontime show now entitled It’s Showtime, which premiered on February 6, 2012. The show simulcasted on Studio 23 (now ABS-CBN Sports and Action) during its relaunch week. It aired live daily on CgeTV’s website.

Competition format

On October 24, 2009, Showtime premiered as a morning program, airing before the network’s noontime shows, serving as the replacement for Pilipinas, Game KNB? (after its successful 8-year run). The original cast consisted of Vhong Navarro, Anne Curtis, Kim Atienza, Jugs Jugueta and Teddy Corpuz, and Vice Ganda as the permanent judge. During the third season, the show added previously evicted judges Billy Crawford and Karylle as hosts.

In its first four seasons (see below), Showtime had its competition format, wherein three groups, each made up of two to twenty-five members (with no age limit), performing a single performance, whether it is a song and/or dance number oAfter the group’s performance, the judges would give a collective yes or no to the group. If the judges give a yes, the group is considered part of the main contest, with the judges’ scores to the group’s performance to be included in the calculation for the winner. A no would, of course, mean exclusion of the group from the main contest. This segment was removed during season 2. In season 3, during the February 16, 2011 episode, the said segment was returned but no random selection, instead the group automatically performs on stage.

The title is also a play on two children’s games: Eat is the transliteration of It from the game Tag while Bulaga refers to Peek-a-boo!. Because of this, the slogan “Hangga’t May Bata, May Eat Bulaga!” (“While There Are Children, There will be Eat Bulaga!”) was coined, also by de Leon. Vic Sotto, on the other hand, composed the theme song.

Eat…Bulaga! premiered on July 30, 1979. TVJ, along with Chiqui Hollman and Richie Reyes (a.k.a. Richie d’ Horsie) were the original hosts. During its first few months on the air, the show was in danger of cancellation. Not only did it face competition against the longest-running noontime show at that time, Student Canteen, it also lacked advertisers. In addition, TVJ did not receive their salaries for six months.

Eat…Bulaga! slowly gained top-rating status in 1980 after the introduction of the segment “Mr. Macho.” Production Specialists soon handed production to Tuviera’s TAPE, Inc. In May 1982, the domestic satellite was launched, allowing Eat…Bulaga! and other RPN programs to be aired nationwide. During the same time, Coney Reyes joined the show while Hollman moved to Student Canteen. In 1987, Aiza Seguerra joined the show after finishing as a runner-up in the “Little Miss Philippines” segment.
